AI Disclosure

California AB 489 (effective January 1, 2026) requires healthcare websites using AI to clearly disclose how AI is used. This page fulfills that requirement.
§ 1 — What AI Is Used on This Website
This website features Mentis, an AI-powered chat assistant. Mentis is powered by OpenAI's GPT models and is operated by Carlo P. Honrado, M.D., Inc.
Mentis is the only AI system on this public website. There are no other AI-generated content systems, diagnostic tools, or automated decision-making systems on this website that affect patient care.
§ 2 — What Mentis Is (and Is Not)
Mentis IS:
- An automated artificial intelligence system
- A general educational assistant for facial plastic surgery information
- Required by law (CA AB 489) to disclose its AI nature at the start of every conversation
- Designed to direct clinical questions to Dr. Honrado's team
Mentis is NOT:
- A physician, nurse practitioner, or any licensed healthcare provider
- Dr. Carlo Honrado or any member of clinical staff
- A diagnostic tool — it cannot assess your condition or recommend treatment
- A substitute for a formal consultation with a board-certified surgeon
- Capable of booking or confirming appointments
- Capable of quoting procedure fees
§ 3 — Persistent AI Disclosure (CA AB 489 Compliance)
California AB 489 (effective January 1, 2026) requires that AI systems interacting with patients in healthcare settings:
- Disclose AI nature at the very first interaction
- Maintain a persistent, visible AI disclosure throughout the conversation
- Never impersonate a licensed healthcare provider
- Always provide a clear path to reach a human provider
Mentis complies with all of these requirements. Every Mentis conversation displays a persistent "AI Assistant" badge. The first message of every conversation identifies Mentis as an AI system. § 4 — What Model Powers Mentis
Mentis is powered by OpenAI's GPT models (specifically GPT-4.1-mini for the public chat assistant). OpenAI's models are trained on large datasets of public internet text. Specific training data for these models is disclosed by OpenAI at openai.com.
Mentis is additionally governed by a practice-specific system prompt that constrains it to the informational scope described in this disclosure. The system prompt enforces all compliance boundaries and prevents Mentis from operating outside its defined scope.
§ 5 — Known Limitations
- AI-generated responses may contain errors, outdated information, or omissions
- Mentis has no access to your medical history, anatomy, or personal health data
- Mentis cannot provide individualized surgical recommendations
- Response quality may vary — always verify important information with Dr. Honrado directly
- Mentis is limited to a fixed number of messages per session to maintain quality
§ 6 — Data Privacy in AI Chat
Messages you send to Mentis are transmitted to OpenAI's API to generate responses. Your conversation is stored in your browser's session storage only — not on our servers. No Protected Health Information (PHI) should be submitted through Mentis. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
