The neckline plays a major role in defining a youthful face. The most prominent signs of an aging face are loose sagging skin (“turkey wattle”), excess fat, vertical bands, and horizontal creases. The before mentioned signs are due to the relaxation of the neck muscles that come with age, resulting in unwanted vertical bands under the chin. When there is an excess of fat in the neck and because of the loss of tight muscles, the fat tends to drop causing the double chin look.
It is called Platysmaplasty because the procedure involves operating the muscle of the neck called platysma. The objective of the surgery is to remove the excess platysma and improve the angle from the chin to the neck, creating a more well-defined jaw neckline. Neck lifts are usually performed in combination with facelifts for better overall results.
Description of the Procedure
During the neck lift procedure, tiny incisions are made under the chin through which the platysma muscle is manipulated and sewn into the new wanted position for a tighter looking neck. Any excess fat and skin are removed for a more youthful looking neckline.
