Patients with severe under-eye bags or bulging are great candidates for lower blepharoplasty. The area of skin area the eyes is extremely delicate. As we age, the surrounding orbital structures weaken and our muscles, ligaments and tendons shift. The fatty pads around the orbital rim may no longer stay in place due to weakening and to the disconnection of aging structures. Changes in the contour around the eyes can contribute to increased hollowing, deeper shadowing and an overall aged appearance.
Lower Bepharoplasty is the surgical procedure to eliminate severe puffiness and under-eye bags. The underlying structures and loose skin are tightened while fat is repositioned via an incision inside the lower lid or beneath the lower lashes.
Recovery
Recovery and healing time is always unique to each patient and will depend of several factors. Patients with prior heath or medical issues or who smoke may experience prolonged or difficult healing. The standard recovery can expect some post-op bruising and swelling that can last up to two or three weeks. Applying ice to the eye area, sleeping with your head elevated, using the prescribed ointments, not wearing contact lenses and following doctor’s orders for pain management are important steps to relieve discomfort. If all is healing well in two weeks you should be able to wear make up that can considerably cover the bruising and make going out in public more comfortable. In around four weeks if your healing is progressing well you can return to your normal physical activity like exercise. The eyes may be more sensitive to light so good sunglasses are recommended. Driving will be allowed when your comfort and vision have returned to normal.
