We are deep into January and hopefully our ambitious goal setting for fitness and weight loss is paying off with a refreshed workout routine or new gym membership. However, walk into any drugstore and you will be quickly reminded that we are on to the next branded month, February. With Valentines Day right around the corner, shelves are dripping with chocolate, sure to give our most earnest attempts to ditch the holiday pounds, a run for their cream-or-peanut-butter-filled money.
In the field of aesthetic and cosmetic medicine, February is the month where lip enhancement and augmentations come into sharp focus. Balancing and/or enhancing uneven or thin lips with minimally invasive, non-surgical methods is one of the most requested treatments this month. It is still January and our first two weeks in February are solidly booked with back-to-back lip rejuvenation patients, both men and women.
Why do lips thin as we age?
Thinning lips are one of the first things we notice on the aging face. Collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid decrease in our bodies as we age. Years of environmental factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress contribute to the depletion of our plumper pouts of youth, not to mention lips are particularly vulnerable as they inherently have an extremely thin outer layer, which only gets thinner over time. As we age the corners of the mouth may droop, and the Cupid’s bow of the upper lip loses its “V” creating a flat and less full appearance. Vertical lip lines appear above and or below the lip, even more so in those who smoke or even had smoked and no longer do.
What filler is most commonly used for lip enhancement?
Dr. Honrado approaches lip enhancement or correcting genetically uneven lips with subtlety, paying close attention to creating a natural, “un-done” look. Dr. Honrado can painlessly create a gorgeous, symmetrical and youthful mouth in around 30 minutes with Juvederm, his injectable, smooth gel filler of choice for the lip area. Unlike other fillers that can create bumpiness and swelling, Juvederm in the lips appears smooth, even and causes the least amount of swelling. Fuller lips with Juvederm will last around 6 to 8 months.
If you have never tried lip enhancement, please book a free consultation with Dr. Honrado to discuss how a little bit of filler can go a long way to creating a more youthful looking mouth. He can discuss your goals and show you before and after pictures so you can know what to expect from a treatment.
