What to Consider Before Facial Cosmetic Surgery

November 12, 2013 By Carlo Honrado

Facial cosmetic surgery is one of the fastest growing industries in Los Angeles, but what does this mean?  These types of procedures include nose jobs, ear surgeries, scar removal, eyelid lifts, implants, injections, brow lifts and even facelifts.

Before one undergoes any facial cosmetic surgery, they should visit their surgeon for a preoperative consultation. During this consultation, a patient can alert the doctor to what their expectations are for their appearance, what procedures they are considering, and what their concerns are. The doctor can then go over the various procedures and what the results would look like, and then the patient and doctor can discuss which of these would suit the patient best.

The patient should consider things like whether they are willing to undergo general anesthesia or just local, how much time they can afford for recovery time and their financial constraints. The recovery time does not mean that the patient will be laid for too much time after any facial cosmetic surgery, but it generally for any procedure, it takes about one to two weeks for the majority of the bruising and swelling to subside. However, for the more surgical options, it could take up to six months to see the full results (i.e. with a nose job).

Other procedures, such as injections or implants, mean an almost immediate recovery and results, but may not be as permanent as other surgical options. During the consultation, the doctor will go over all the procedures, recovery times, costs, surgery specifics, and possible risks. The patients should have realistic expectations of what the surgery and results will look like.

Once these concerns have been addressed, a surgery can be scheduled. Surgery times and preparation will vary, but a good doctor will be thorough in addressing these issues as well as perform excellent follow-up when it comes to aftercare, whether it be stitching removal or the six-month post-operative evaluation.
