No two rhinoplasties are ever exactly alike.
And while a surgeon’s technique and approach may be similar time after time, no two noses are identical and therefor either are the surgeries. When we think about rhinoplasties the first thing that comes to mind is the idea of cosmetic reconstruction. But a large portion of our rhinoplasty work is medically related to treat and correct physical and congenital deformities. These functional rhinoplasties can mean the difference between proper and improper breathing. They have a tremendous impact on the health of the patient.
What is a non-cosmetic rhinoplasty?
There are many reasons for reconstructive rhinoplasty to improve nasal function, such as a septoplasty (delayed treatment for nasal trauma/fracture) or sub mucous resection (deviated septum / obstruction). Oftentimes a severe physical/functional deviation may require cosmetic work as well, if for example, the nose has severely shifted due to injury. In this case oftentimes a board certified facial plastic surgeon will perform the cosmetic portion of the operation while an Ear Nose and Throat surgeon will work on the functional aspects. This “doubling up” on surgeons in a single surgical procedure is quite common in reconstructive rhinoplasties of this nature.
While both types of surgeons are fully capable performing all aspects, both cosmetic and functional, it is wise to choose your surgeons very carefully and for the expertise in their skill set.
Does insurance cover a functional rhinoplasty?
In the case of functional or reconstructive surgeries, there are very stringent guidelines for insurance coverage. Health insurance usually covers functional surgery for breathing issues after several tests to positively determine it is in fact, a functional issue. Allergy treatments to improve breathing must have failed and MRI’s/ CT scans must prove positive for deformity or injury. The surgery is often covered only when the injury is recent.
