BOTOX – NOT JUST FOR WRINKLES ANYMORE

December 13, 2013 By Carlo Honrado

Most of my patients are familiar with Botox to minimize and reduce wrinkles in the face and neck.  But there are many other ways in which I can help my patients with this powerful toxin that go beyond wrinkle maintenance.

Facial Contouring:

Botox can be used to contour and even-out asymmetry in the face.  Our faces are naturally asymmetrical.  And they should stay that way to remain natural looking.  But often one side of the jaw is notably larger and more pronounced than the other.  A tiny dose of Botox can help relax the masseter muscles to create a more even but still natural-looking facial contour.   It can also slim the jaw entirely, which in turn creates a look of higher cheekbones.  Some women complain of their jaws being too square. A protruding jaw-line or one that is too chiseled can overpower a face and create a heavy, masculine appearance. Slimming the masseter muscles of the jaw with Botox is an increasingly popular way to address this issue and create a more feminine, heart-shaped face.

Botox can relieve TMJ

Do you gnaw your teeth in your sleep?  Has your dentist suggested a night guard?  Are your teeth overly sensitive from wearing away the dentin?  Are you an excessive gum chewer? A fantastic treatment for TMJ or temporomandibular joint syndrome, more commonly known as teeth grinding, is injecting the masseter muscles with Botox. A quick few injections and not only is grueling pain relived but the jaw is relaxed inturn revealing a softer, smoother looking jawline.

Botox, a non-surgical nose job alternative:

Nasal Tip Rotation:

Botox can help contour and lift the nasal tip.  It is gaining traction as a non-surgical approach to handle subtle drooping in the tip of the nose.  A touch of Botox carefully injected into the nose can relax the muscle ever so slightly and create just the right amount of lift. This is ideal for the patient who is hesitant to undergo surgery or whose nose simply does not require it.

Gummy Smile Reduction

A Gummy Smile is when the upper lip elevates too far above their upper teeth when smiling, exposing gums and producing an unattractive toothy and gummy smile. One of the reasons is a hyperactive muscle, which elevates the upper lip. Injecting small amounts of Botox into the hyperactive muscle of the upper lip reduces the elevation of the upper lip, thereby reducing the gummy smile.  In less than ten minutes, a natural, carefree and confident smile is achieved, empowering patients and increasing self-esteem and confidence.  Another contributing factor of a gummy smile may be a thin upper lip in which case, complimenting the procedure with a filler such as Restylane or Juvederm is recommended.

Eye spasms (blepharospasms):

Botox is also the primary therapy used for the treatment eye involuntary twitching and uncontrolled blinking.  These abnormal spasms can result in uncontrolled and excessive blinking, eye twitching, or closing of your eyelids. This could impair your vision, and make everyday tasks such as driving or using a computer difficult. Since 1989, BOTOX injections have been the principal treatment for blepharospasm.
